Dreaming of your own holiday cabin and wondering how long its construction will take? It depends on many factors – from regulatory formalities, through the choice of foundations, to the project’s complexity and the finish level. While building a standard residential house usually takes many months, a wooden holiday cabin can be erected in a few days – provided you plan the whole process well and entrust it to a trusted company. In this article, step by step, we explain how you can build a holiday cabin quickly and what exactly the completion time depends on.
Building a holiday cabin and the essential formalities
Self-build without proper permissions, regardless of property rights, brings serious risks and problems. Therefore, even for the construction of a holiday cabin, the respective authority must grant consent. Depending on the cabin’s size, different formalities must be fulfilled.
Want to build a holiday cabin? Formalities limited to the bare minimum!
To maximize speed, consider a standalone single‑storey holiday cabin up to 35 m². In this case, you only need to notify the County Office of the construction (start date and scope of works). It’s also worth noting that ground floor does not necessarily mean a strictly single-level home; partial mezzanines are allowed. If the authorities do not raise an objection within 21 days, you can begin work under the so‑called silent consent of the office.
For a holiday cabin larger than the legally set value or with an extra floor, formalities pile up. You will need a building permit, which may take up to three months.
Building a holiday cabin and its foundations
Another factor influencing the waiting time for your dream cabin is the type of foundations to be laid.
Foundation in a few hours
For light frame holiday cabins, a point foundation of prefabricated blocks is usually enough. These can be laid by you, and the whole work can be finished in just a few hours. This foundation type can also be prepared by our specialists before cabin installation. The service is free, but the Client must first prepare the site – clear and level the ground. Material purchase is to be agreed.
Foundation in a few days
However, on uneven ground with unknown load-bearing capacity, it’s better to opt for a more stable point foundation variant, i.e. shoring tubes filled with concrete. This, however, needs to dry and set well, which can take a few days. The same applies to reinforced slab foundations, which will be ready only after at least a week.
What affects the construction time of a holiday cabin?
Planning a holiday cabin? Remember that the real completion time may vary depending on many factors. Even if the cabin’s notification went smoothly, subsequent stages – from component production to mounting – may lengthen or shorten depending on the variables below:
Size of the holiday cabin and project complexity
A simple single‑storey cabin with an area of 25–35 m² will go up much faster than a design with a mezzanine, large glazing or an unusual interior layout. The more individualized the project, the longer the production and installation will take. If you want to build the cabin as quickly as possible – choose a standard, ready-made project.
Finish level of the holiday cabin
The basic version of a seasonal cabin (e.g. in a closed shell state) is built much faster than a structure prepared for year‑round use with additional insulation, wiring or interior finishing. The choice of options directly affects how long the cabin’s construction takes.
Availability of materials and seasonality
Drewnolandia uses only structural timber of class C24 (solid and glued BSH, KVH), which must meet defined standards. During peak demand periods (spring, summer) the lead time for material can lengthen, so it’s worth planning in advance when you want to build a wooden holiday cabin.
Plot location
Hard‑to‑reach places, a long distance from the main road, access restrictions or ground with low bearing capacity – all of this can extend the installation time. It’s worth discussing with your advisor whether the chosen location will lengthen the overall process.
Time needed for formalities
If you’re planning a cabin up to 35 m², a simple notification of construction suffices, significantly shortening the waiting time. For larger projects you need a permit – and that can take several months.
Time needed to realize a Drewnolandia order
In Drewnolandia you can order a cabin from the offer. Of course, every proposal can be individually tailored to your needs and preferences – change the room layout, the position of windows or doors, modify dimensions, decide on the façade colors, roofing, ornaments. Arrangements shouldn’t take longer than a few days. After approving the final protocol and quote, we set the first available completion date, which usually requires up to three months, though much depends on when the client chooses to proceed. Therefore, the earlier you handle all construction-related formalities, the faster the realization date will be.
How long does it take to build a holiday cabin?
The order realization date is binding for us – we never move it. Cabin elements are prepared in advance and when the order realization date arrives, they are ready to be assembled.
That’s a lot of work! In different production departments, individual cabin elements are created – walls, floor, window joinery, roof, stairs – which then must be painted and dried properly. The production time for a cabin isn’t the shortest, but for us quality and durability come first.
Montaż domku letniskowego – ile trwa?
At the date set when you placed the order, our installation team arrives early in the morning. If the foundation has been prepared beforehand, after a quick inspection they get to work. The outline of the holiday cabin can be seen after just a few hours! During this time the installers lay the floor and raise the cabin walls.
Holiday cabin in a few days!
The exact time required to assemble a holiday cabin depends on the cabin’s dimensions and finish level. The simplest shapes are erected the same day! The maximum time for assembling a holiday cabin from our range is five working days. During the entire installation process the Client may be on site, but doesn’t have to – they can attend to their own matters, leaving the cabin in professional hands. You will definitely need to visit the site twice – at the start and at the end, to collect the keys and required documents.
Holiday cabin built quickly – is this the ideal solution for whom?
Not everyone wants months‑long brick or concrete construction. More and more people choose to build a holiday cabin – fast, efficient, and with minimal formalities. Who stands to benefit most from this option?
- Owners of recreational plots and plots intended for holiday homes
Are you wondering which plot will be suitable for a holiday cabin? In most cases, access to a public road and compliance with the local zoning plan or building conditions is enough.
If you own a recreational plot, you can relatively quickly start the cabin construction – also in a version with a usable attic, if local law allows it.
Note: On ROD plots, separate regulations apply – maximum building area is 35 m²; no usable attic is allowed. Before deciding, read the regulations or consult the ROD board.
- Families needing extra space
Your home is starting to “burst at the seams” and you need more space? If you have a sufficiently large plot, consider building a cabin with a built‑up area of up to 35 m²! It can serve as additional guest space, a children’s play area, or a home office with a view of greenery. Moreover, attic versions allow optimal use of space even with a small footprint.
- People planning holidays or remote work outside the city
The pandemic showed that cabins situated off the beaten path can function quite comfortably as “home offices.” If you dream of working outdoors, with a view of a forest or lake, you don’t have to wait a year – a quickly built holiday cabin is a real alternative to a longhouse build.
- Investors and owners of tourist facilities
Want to expand your accommodation base with modern, eco‑friendly structures? Thanks to prefab construction you can raise a holiday cabin in just a few days – a great option for holiday resorts, glamping sites and agro-tourism farms that want to respond quickly to growing domestic tourism interest.
Express build pace vs. cabin quality
Domek wybudowany w ciągu jednego dnia? On one hand that’s great, but on the other it may raise questions. Will the building be stable enough? Won’t it crumble in a strong gust of wind? Are all elements adequately protected?
Building the cabin in one day would not be possible without proper preparation on our side. We build our holiday cabins using a skeleton frame. Earlier, in line with the project guidelines and the Client’s instructions, we manufacture all necessary structural, functional and decorative elements. We assemble these prepared parts into a whole, avoiding any complicated construction works. Our experienced specialists do not drag out the work – they strive to finish the installation as quickly as possible.
Quality is shown by the building materials!
The quality of our cabins is not demonstrated by speed of assembly, but by the materials, technologies and production techniques used.
A wooden holiday cabin ordered from Drewnolandia can be ready for use within three months from placing the order. For classic brick houses, the time is also lengthened several times. If you want the shortest possible waiting time, a wooden holiday cabin is a great solution.
Nor is its quality inferior to a brick home, all thanks to the wood we use.
There are three types of structural timber. A large part of the cabin is made from solid C24 wood in the so‑called visual class – carefully selected wood with no natural discolorations, cracks or dense knots. Critical structural elements are reinforced with KVH and BSH timber – this natural material is mechanically enhanced to improve its resistance to cracking. The wood is kiln‑dried and coated with a protective preservative.
DIY holiday cabin – what you should know?
Many investors ask whether they can build a holiday cabin themselves. The answer is yes – especially for simple frame constructions or prefab kits. However, you should be aware that DIY construction of a holiday cabin is a much more time‑consuming and demanding process than outsourcing the installation to an experienced team.
Before starting construction, complete all formalities (e.g. notify the construction of a holiday cabin to the appropriate office). Even if you opt for a small cabin up to 35 m², you should know the basics of structural design, wood processing, insulation and moisture protection.
DIY installation may take from a few weeks to several months, depending on skills, tool availability, weather conditions and the investor’s free time.
Unlike building a residential home, holiday cabins are simpler by design, but still require precision and attention to detail – from laying foundations to final protection of the structure. Therefore, even if you want to save time, it’s worth considering at least partial professional support, especially at critical stages.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to build a holiday cabin?
Everything depends on the materials used and the building method. Traditional brick cabins take several, or even many months. Scandinavian wooden cabins with a frame structure are produced as prefabs – the real presence of a team on site is therefore from one to five days.
What does the installation of a holiday cabin look like?
If the ordered cabin is built in a frame construction, all its elements are delivered on site in ready‑to‑assemble form. It’s enough to put them together “piece by piece,” which experienced specialists can do even in one day.
Is a quickly built prefab holiday cabin of lower quality?
The quality of a holiday cabin is not determined by the pace of its installation but by the materials used and the production method. Installation may be completed in a few days, but cabin production is spread over time, and all its elements undergo numerous quality checks.
Can anyone build a holiday cabin on their plot?
Not always. To start construction you must have the right to dispose of the property for building purposes. This means you must be the owner, perpetual usufructuary, or have the owner’s written consent to build. Lack of formal rights to the property may result in rejection of the notification or permit application.
Is every plot suitable for a holiday cabin?
Not always. The key role is played by the local zoning plan. If the plan allows recreational or holiday development, construction will be possible. In the absence of a local zoning plan, you’ll need a decision on building conditions. Also check whether the area is subject to zoning restrictions due to nature protection or flood risk.
How much does it cost to build a holiday cabin in 2025?
It depends on many factors – standards, square footage, finishing and location. On average, the cost of construction in a shell state ranges from 90,000 to 170,000 PLN. In a mezzanine or year‑round insulation version it can be higher. Remember that the overall cost depends on chosen materials and services (e.g. installation, foundations, transport). Can I have a usable attic in a holiday cabin without a permit?
Yes, but only if it’s a non‑habitable attic, e.g. a loft without living functions. According to regulations, in cabins up to 35 m² a light non‑habitable attic is allowed, as long as it does not increase the usable area or the number of storeys. For a full‑sized floor, a permit is required.
Do I have to notify the building intention to authorities?
Yes, even for small cabins it is necessary to officially notify before starting construction. The notification is submitted to the county architectural department, where you must provide, among other things, the planned start date, scope of works and a document confirming the right to dispose of the plot. What differentiates a holiday cabin from an all‑year house?
The main difference concerns intended use – a holiday cabin may not be used for permanent residence or living purposes. It has different insulation, ventilation and usage rules. Do you want to live there permanently? You must build in accordance with living‑house conditions, which includes the need for a permit, compliance with the minister of infrastructure regulations and strict energy standards.
Can I start construction right after the notification?
No. By law you must wait 21 days from the notification submission. If the authority does not raise an objection within this period, you may start construction works. Otherwise, a permit will be required. Only after this time can you legally commence works on the plot.
Which regulations govern the construction of holiday cabins?
The construction is regulated, among others, by the Minister of Infrastructure regulation of April 12, 2002 on technical conditions to be met by buildings and their placement. This document defines, among other things, minimum distances from plot boundaries, building height, and road access. The regulations are also closely linked to municipal spatial planning.
What does step‑by‑step construction of a holiday cabin look like?
The step‑by‑step construction of a holiday cabin looks like this:
- verification of the local zoning plan or obtaining building‑conditions,
- notification of the intention to build at the starostwo or county architectural department,
- preparation of foundations and site,
- production and delivery of prefab components,
- on‑site assembly.
Can a holiday cabin be expanded in the future?
Yes, but only if the new development still complies with the law – for example not exceeding 35 m² of built‑up area for notification or meeting the conditions for a building permit. With any structural change, remember to re‑notify or obtain a permit, in line with local spatial planning.
